EU Parliament rejects JURI proposal on sustainability reporting and due diligence laws

On 22 October 2025, the European Parliament rejected a proposed compromise text on the European Commission’s Omnibus I package, which had been approved on 13 October by JURI, the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee. The compromise text set out the proposed Parliament position on simplifying sustainability reporting and due diligence obligations for companies operating within the EU. The Members of European Parliament (MEPs) had been asked to vote on whether the text approved by JURI on 13 October 2025 could go straight to the trilogue discussions, without further scrutiny from the Parliament.

The proposed compromise text, previously backed by the left and centrist parties, was defeated 318 to 309, with 34 abstentions, sending the file back to negotiations at the next Parliament plenary which will be held on 13 November 2025, and delaying the start of the trilogue until after that date.

The Parliament aims to reach a solution by the end of 2025 in response to calls for clarity from the business community.
